Målin - Day 10 (15.3.)

Today we started our trip to the Great Ocean Road.
I stood up at 6.30 am and I went to school with my host dad by car.
We met at 8.45 am at the Keilor Campus. At 9 o'clock we hit the road by bus.
I was very excited for the long bus tour and the excursions.

First we visited the Great Ocean Road entrance sign and we took a lot of photos.

After that we had a short break to eat and to go to the beach. Again we took a lot of photos.

The next stop was at a waterfall and we had to walk downhill because the bus wasn't allowed to drive on this road. Lynn and Yasmin were taken by the car of Mr Atkinson because they were in pain and on the way back almost everyone could go back by car.
We were able to go on the stones and rocks around the waterfalls. But the waterfalls weren't very wet because in the last few months the weather was very dry.

Sometimes we could see free-living koalas next to the road and stopped to take photos of them. Everybody was very excited about seeing koalas but after the second time of seeing them it became boring except for Mrs. Otten!

Later we went to the Cape Otway Lighthouse and climbed upstairs to go out and take photos of the wonderful view. It was so windy outside that the people who wear glasses had to take them off.

Finally we arrived the hostel and had to move into our rooms. All of the 12 girls had to sleep in one room! The boys were split  up into two rooms of six and seven people.

For dinner we had sausages, steaks, some salads and bread. That was similar to a barbecue which is called 'Barbie' in Australia. The dessert was different kinds of cake.
You can check out the website on Facebook of our hostel 'Port Campbell Hostel' because they took some pictures as well and put them on their page. They even used our hashtag #bremengoesmelbourne2K16!

I also learned that sweets are called 'Lollies' here.

Tonight we went to the beach which was near the Hostel and watched the stars.

Tomorrow we will drive on and I'm looking forward to the next days of the Great Ocean Road!

Jannis - Day 9 (14.3.)

Today is Monday 14th March and it’s Labour Day. That means everybody has a day off.

My exchange family and me went to Phillip Island yesterday and Daniel and me stayed overnight. Jason’s and Bjarne’s exchange families stayed with us at a rented house on the island. We played some German, Australian and Vietnamese card games until 1 a clock in the night. It was great fun and we laughed a lot. We went to bed and in the morning woke up, ate breakfast and packed our stuff to leave. On the way back home we stopped two times.

OACC Macintosh HD:Users:daniel.nelson:Desktop:IMG_2279.JPGThe first time we stopped to go a Chocolate Factory called “Pannys Amazing World of Chocolate”.

It is a very small but nice factory, not comparable to Germans.

They explain how chocolate is made and there are a lot of things displayed which are made out of chocolate e.g. a miniature train.
OACC Macintosh HD:Users:daniel.nelson:Desktop:IMG_2282.JPG
There was a glass showcase with Milka and Hachez chocolate inside!!!!! They also have some funny games to play for chocolate as reward. If you manage to win in a game, you get a little ball made out of wood which you can change in chocolate. We found out a way to win every time and how to get unlimited free chocolate.

There was a really, really nice machine to make chocolate by itself. You can choose your flavour between Cola, Strawberry, Wasabi and of course Vegemite!!! I had some cola chocolate, but I didn’t like it. The chocolate fabric was a great experience and much fun. It is a exhibition with lots of fun and you could do many things by yourself. It was not just watching and getting facts and figures it was doing by yourself and getting to know to the chocolate world on this way.

The second time we stopped was at the “Royal Children’s Hospital” because Ethan’s mum (Jason’s exchange Student) works there. The hospitals in Australia are completely different to the German ones. They don’t have the special hospital look as we are used to they are open and look friendly. E.g. they have a large aquarium to distract the children from their diseases. Jason’s guest mum took us around and we became V.I.P’s in her workplace. It was really interesting and I have never seen things like this before. Sadly we were not allowed to take some pictures, so I can only present you some pictures from the chocolate factory.

Later we drove home and I packed my stuff for tomorrow. We will go to the Great Ocean Road for three days. I hope it will be a great experience, which I will never forget. For more information about the Great Ocean Road and what we are doing, read our blog tomorrow ;)

We had dinner a few minutes ago it was really delicious. We had fish, which tasted like in Germany and I felt like back home.

Bruce - Day 8 (13.3.)

My exchange family and I went on a trip to Sydney from the 11th March to 13th March.

We arrived at about half past eleven at the airport in Sydney and spent the rest of the day in the city and our hotel room.
On Saturday we went to Manly beach and had a great time because the weather was hot and sunny.

Today we needed to get up early because we had a big aim, which was Bondi Beach. We first took a ride on the train from our hotel and then we went on a long walk. Because of the hot weather, we already went for a swim at Captain Cove Beach.

Captain Cove Beach is actually not that far from Bondi Beach but we couldn’t resist the cold water.
We kept on walking up to Bondi Beach and we were just enjoying the time we had there.

The waves weren’t too big but they were alright. Afterwards we went back to our hotel, which is called the Hyde Park Inn, to change our clothes and to have something to eat.

We went to the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge again to see the sights while the sun was setting. It was awesome and we had a great view.

A woman wanted to take a picture of me and said “give me your camera and i’ll take a photo of you” and showed me pictures of her “nephew” and said “do you see the jacket he wears? It’s so cute but so expensive. Come on i’ll take a photo of you now”. I didn’t give her my camera because she was a pick-pocket. She was walking around and was trying to steel cameras and phones.

We had a great time in Sydney and I am so thankful for that :)

The words I learned were:

rip-off = Abzocke                     Bogan = bad, typical Aussie                  vicious = aggressive

Fabia - Day 7 (12.3.)

We have been in Melbourne for a week now and I’m so in love with the city and the country!
During this week we have so seen so many different things and the weather is beautiful, even when it's not so sunny.

I’m writing over a day on the weekend, actually a host family day, but I was only on the road with my host brother
My day started at 10 am. We drove over half an hour to Werribee Open Range Zoo. The first thing we did, was the safari tour with the bus through the areas of African animals.

We saw a lot of animals like....

After the safari bus tour, we went to see the other animals. We saw little crocodiles, snakes, spiders, monkeys and lions with a baby lion.
Then we went to the Australian journey where only ‘Australian animals’ can be found like the koala...

Unfortunately we didn’t get to see any kangaroos or the Tasmanian devil.
After the zoo we drove to St. Kilda Beach.

We took a break at a restaurant near the beach and ended the day there.

Lynn - Day 6 (11.3.)

Today was a special school day. The German exchange students and the Australian students from the German class spent time together. The day started at 7 am. Mallory and I had to leave the house at 7:45am because we had to catch the Bus at 8:05 am.
When we got to school Mallory took me to Yarah and Georgia because she is not in the German class. After that we met the other German and Australian students. There Ms. Taiwo and Mr. Eicker told us that weren`t allowed to speak English the whole day.
The first thing we did was that all the German students had to sit in a circle and with an Australian student in front of us. Then we had the task to ask each other questions in German. I was really surprised that all of the Australian students could speak German so well.
After the first game, we had to split up into groups. As the day progressed, we should collect points and the group with the most points at the end would win. The winners would get a lunch from Ms. Taiwo. The first assignment was a game like the board game Tabu. The German students had to explain German words in German. I think that was really hard for the Australian people. There was a lot of words they didn`t know.
The second game of the day was Tic Tac Toe. But not on a paper or something like that. We had a field on the ground and two different types of ribbons. Than two groups played against each other. The start was 10 meters away from the field and we had to run to get the ribbons on the field. That was a funny game and I think all the students enjoyed that.

After this game we got cake from the school and began to play another game in the groups. It was a kind of a quiz with four different categories: geography, literature, soccer and general. It was funny but it was only questions about Germany and I think the Australian students wouldn`t have been able to reply to any of the questions without our help.
After that the Australian students had to explain to us an Australian game. It’s called Downball. Downball is a game which is played with 4 people. One person hits the ball in their square first then its lands in another square. You lose for example when the ball doesn`t land in your field or you hit the ball out. After we had played this game we had lunch. At lunch I tried a typical Australian food. It called a sausage roll and I love them!
Right after the lunch the Australian students had to go to their house performances and we watched a movie about Australia. It is called MaboUnfortunately we could not finish watching the film.

After school Mallory and I went with Patrice and Elena to the Melbourne Star. The Melbourne star is like the London Eye. In the Melbourne Star we had a really good view over the whole city.

All in all it was a very cool and fun day for me.

The Middle School students from Taylors Lakes Campus had a Sports Carnival
That is very much different to our Sportfest. Everything is well-organised and every students loves to participate in different events like running, long jump, high jump or shot put.
All students belong to a 'house'. The houses at Overnewton are called: Curie, Newton, Edison and Pasteur. Students participating in events collect points for their house and at the end of the school year one house wins for collecting the most points in various events like the Sports, Swimming, Athletic and Cross Country Carnival as well as for example Public Speaking and Performing Arts.
The students joined their hosts in their house and the collected points for the team.

Insa event won the shot put (Kugelstossen) in year 9! Well done, Insa!

Yasmin - Day 4 (9.3.)

Today we were in the city again. We met at 8:45 am at Canowindra, so I had to hit the road at 8 o’clock. It is a big detour, because I already live in the city. When we arrived at school (Canowindra), we walked to the train station (Watergardens).  About 40 minutes later we arrived in the city at Parliament Station, which is right in front of the Parliament House. We had to finish our Scavenger Hunts from the day before.

From there we took the City Circle

We saw most of the important landmarks in Melbourne and there was a running commentary about the landmarks. I could show my friends my house at Docklands.

Half an hour later we got off at Melbourne Central Station. We had time for shopping and I bought a perfume at Sephora.

After an hour it was time to go to the State Library of Victoria. It is an old building with very interesting architecture. There is a high room called reading room. It was very ornate.

After that we went to the Old Melbourne Gaol

This is where Ned Kelly, a famous bushranger, was hanged. It is creepy but interesting. In every cell is a story about a hanged prisoner or some information about the gaol.
There are three separate cellblocks ad two hospitals. Every cellblock had the same special system. The prisoner had to think about their faults. Downstairs were little cells for only one prisoner. No speaking was allowed - only thinking. Once a week the prisoners could go out, but with a silence mask. They could't see each other's faces and they couldn't speak. When they acknowledged their crime, then they could go upstairs. There cells were bigger and fitted up to 9 people and the prisoners were allowed to speak and to work in the prison. There was another way to help them realize what their fate could be. When they went inside the building or upstairs they faced the gallows.  It was very hard.

After the tour of the gaol we went home. For dinner we had shark, which is called flake in Australia. It was yummy.
